Black PE Foam Tape — Application and Handling

Surfaces must be free of dust, grease, oil and water. Use isopropyl alcohol as cleaner on both surfaces. Bond strength depends on surface area in direct contact with the tape. Apply firm pressure for a proper bond.

How to apply BiTape 485N black PE foam tape

  1. Clean both substrates. Surfaces must be free of dust, grease, oil and water. Wipe both bonding faces with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Cut the tape to length. Measure the bonding line. Cut the black PE foam tape with scissors or utility knife. For corners on emblems or signage, use 45° miter cuts to maintain continuity.
  3. Apply to the first substrate. Peel the light-blue PE film liner from one side. Position the tape and press firmly along the entire run, ensuring uniform contact with the substrate.
  4. Bond the second substrate. Peel the remaining liner. Align the second substrate and press firmly. Bond strength depends on surface area in direct contact — cover the entire overlap.
  5. Allow shear curing time. Initial loop tack ≥5.0 kg/25 mm (FINAT 9) is achieved immediately. Shear strength ≥24 h under 1.0 kg load develops after 24 hours at room temperature. For low surface energy substrates (PE, PP, silicone, PTFE), apply primer or plasma pretreatment.

We offer slit rolls and die-cut shapes according to your project geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. BiTape 485N is a 1.6 mm (1/16 in) black PE foam tape — a black double sided foam tape with solvent-based acrylic adhesive on 4 PCF closed-cell black polyethylene foam. This black PE foam tape delivers loop tack ≥5.0 kg/25 mm (FINAT 9) — the highest of the BiTape PE family — peel adhesion ≥3.5 kg/25 mm (PSTC-3), shear resistance ≥24 h under 1.0 kg at room temperature, tensile strength >20 kg at 80 °C. Service -22 to 176 °F. AAMA certified for window glazing.
Black PE foam tape 485N requires both substrates free of dust, grease, oil and water. Isopropyl alcohol is the recommended cleaner for both bonding faces. Apply firm pressure across the entire bond area to achieve correct wet-out. Low surface energy substrates (PE, PP, silicone, PTFE) require primer or plasma pretreatment to achieve full performance. Continuous immersion is not recommended.
Yes. Black PE foam tape 485N is AAMA certified for window glazing applications and seals effectively against water, dust and light. Its 1.6 mm 4 PCF closed-cell foam compensates surface irregularities on dark-anodized aluminum, painted steel and PVC frames. Typical applications: window glazing on dark frames, fixing emblems and nameplates, plastic trim mounting on automotive body panels and architectural assemblies with black or dark finishes.
BiTape 485N black PE foam tape is specified for automotive (emblems, nameplates, plastic trim and license plate holders on body panels), construction (AAMA window glazing on dark-anodized frames, plastic trim mounting), printing industry and signage (vertical metal letters, light fixture brackets, POP displays on dark substrates) and general industrial mounting where a discreet black 1.6 mm bond line is required.
485N is the only black PE foam tape in the BiTape family — 1.6 mm 4 PCF, with the highest loop tack (≥5.0 kg/25 mm) and peel (≥3.5 kg/25 mm) of all PE foam tapes. AAMA certified, primary for automotive emblems, dark-finish signage and discreet black bond lines. 4203B is white 3.0 mm 2.5 PCF AAMA — for window glazing on uneven surfaces and white-finish signage. 4500B is white 1.0 mm 4 PCF with carrier-broken failure — for high-tack mounting on smooth white substrates. Specify by substrate color, gap dimension and AAMA requirement.
BiTape 485N black PE foam tape is available in standard widths 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1" and 2" (6.4, 12.7, 19, 25.4 and 50.8 mm). Custom widths on request. AAMA certified for window glazing. Shelf life 2 years from date of manufacture, stored at 65-85 °F (18-29 °C) and 50-70 % relative humidity.
BiTape 485N is engineered with a higher-tack solvent-based acrylic adhesive system on 4 PCF closed-cell black polyethylene foam, delivering loop tack ≥5.0 kg/25 mm (FINAT 9) and peel ≥3.5 kg/25 mm (PSTC-3). This is approximately 25 % higher tack than 4500B (≥4.0 kg/25 mm) and 67 % higher than 4203B (≥3.0 kg/25 mm). The trade-off: 485N is best on dark substrates where the black foam stays invisible — for white or visible bond lines specify 4203B (3 mm white AAMA) or 4500B (1 mm white carrier-broken).
BiTape 485N is a double-sided foam tape — designed to bond two substrates together (mounting, fixing, sealing). Choose 485N when you need to fix an emblem, nameplate, plastic trim or panel onto a dark-finish surface and require a discreet black bond line plus high tack ≥5.0 kg/25 mm. If your goal is only to seal a closure gap (door, window, lid) without bonding, specify a single-sided foam gasket tape: BiTape 203N (3 mm thin profile) or BiTape 206N (6.4 mm thick profile).
